COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Connecting education with community needs
The work
I volunteered with ElGhana in Kumasi, Ghana, supporting teaching and community outreach. My responsibilities included helping families access food assistance and educational materials and organizing occasional activities for children.
My approach
I worked with local staff and community members both to identify people who needed support and to help distribute available resources. Teaching was central to my work, but I also saw how needs outside the classroom could shape the support children and families required.
What I learned
Working alongside people who knew their communities far better than I did reinforced the importance of listening, respecting local knowledge, and contributing through existing relationships. Good intentions are not enough; resources have to reach the people who need them.
What I bring forward
The experience helped form an approach I still value: understand the people affected, learn how support is already organized, and focus on practical work that is genuinely useful.
